People vary in their learning styles and preferences, this can often be according to the context they are in, and the task ahead of them.
It is important to cater training to a person’s learning style, this is so you can get the most of them as a learner and that they maximise from the benefits of their lessons, no matter what stage in their training they are at.
You need to be aware of your own learning style as it can affect the way that you teach. We can at times, and without realising, conduct our training for others based on how we prefer to learn. This will work with some and not for others and so if we have this level of awareness, we can be more mindful of training to people’s preferences.
People will rarely be just one learning style or preference, many people use a mixture of learning styles and in varying degrees, according to the task and the context they are faced with.
People will sometimes want to use a different style to their preferred one to learn a new topic or discuss their performance on a skill they are developing, ask them how they want to chat about something when starting the conversation.
Have topics planned so that you can teach them in a variety of ways. A trainer’s toolkit contains a real variety of things and some of the fundamentals are to have the ability to approach the same task but from many different ways. This will help cater for the different approaches to tasks that you will notice people have
Trainers need to have a variety of training tools and in addition, they need to know what one(s) to use, when and with what clients. Having an understanding of how people take on board information will help a lot with this.
