What you'll learn
During the Drivers With Diverse Needs Workshop (DWDN), you will gain a comprehensive understanding of common special educational needs and the ways in which they can affect the process of learning to drive. The course will equip you with the knowledge and skills needed to effectively assess your pupils’ individual needs and aptitude, and to deliver training sessions that meet their unique requirements.
- The most common diverse needs conditions and their symptoms
- Understanding how these conditions affect the task of learning to drive
- How to assess your pupil’s individual needs and aptitude
- Latest research findings on driving with these conditions
- How to evaluate whether your pupil is ready/able to begin learning to drive
- Working in groups to discuss case studies and adapt training methods to assist with student learning
- Your role in helping and supporting students with diverse needs, including when to refer them to external organisations for additional support

The trainer

Kevin Martin - Head of Training and Development | DIA
Kevin Martin.has been a self-employed Approved Driving Instructor (ADI), First Aid, and Bikeability trainer since 2012. With City & Guilds and NVQ qualifications, Kevin has extensive experience in the world of training, beginning his career in 1998 with Royal Mail.
Over the past decade, Kevin has been involved in a variety of road safety initiatives and education programs, including Bikeability, Learner Driver Training, Fleet Driver Training for companies such as Royal Mail, Driving Monitor, and Ocado, U17’s Driver Training for Young Driver and Mercedes Benz World, 4 x 4 training for Mercedes Benz World, and the delivery of Driver Aware Courses in classroom, on-road, and online.
As the trainer for the DWDN workshop, Kevin brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to the course. He will guide you through the workshop, provide insights and guidance, and facilitate group discussions and activities to help you apply your new knowledge and skills in real-life scenarios.
