The DVLA takes advice from the Honorary Medical Advisory Panels to make informed decisions about health standards required for safe driving
The advisory panel:
- Covers Vision, Diabetes, Neurology, Cardiology, Alcohol/Drugs, Psychiatry
- Appointed by Secretary of State
- Advise on interpretation of the Law in relation to fitness to drive
- Practising clinicians with expertise in relevant area of medicine
- Meet 6 twice per annum to advise on medical fitness standards in line with latest clinical practice, research developments etc
- Consider individual cases when requested by DVLA
DVLA’s customer journey
Drivers and riders can self-declare a medical issue that may affect their ability to drive or ride safely, and can do so by the following:
- Application or notification
- General Practitioner report
- Consultant report
- Report from Eye Health Professionals e.g Optometrist
- Driving assessment appraisal
