Welcome to Applied Coach Approach, DIA’s popular coaching course for driver and rider trainers that is now delivered online. Work through the learning materials at your own pace, in your own time and join the group Zoom study sessions with the tutor, plus ask your questions too.
This course is designed for all driver and rider trainers and assumes you have prior knowledge of the principles of coaching. The course covers many aspects of the role of a coach and is divided into three parts:
Part 1 – Self guided online study
As soon as you enrol onto the course you will have access to the online learning content which you can work through at your own pace and at a time that suits you. This part of the course will include:
- Different learning styles including VAK and Honey and Mumford, focusing on how these approaches are used in practice.
- An overview of coaching covering the rationale of using coaching as a training approach in a learner context, and what part coaching can play for ADIs.
- An introduction to the HERMES project as well as the importance of coaching style questions, coaching models and SMART goals in ensuring your lessons are built on solid foundations.
- What part micro-teaching and scaling play in the context of a driving lesson.
- Teaching styles that can be used, different forms of communication and how VAK can be applied in practice.
Part 2 – Zoom session 1
This will be led by the course tutor and will be the first opportunity to interact with others on the course. This part of the course will include:
- A recap of where you are so far.
- The characteristics of a good coach.
- Group exercises.
- Video clip review and discussion.
Part 3 – Zoom session 2
This session will also be led by the course tutor and will give you another opportunity to interact with others on the course. This part of the course will include:
- A recap and review of any homework set.
- The difference between an instructional briefing vs a client centred learning approach.
- The '7R' model with a video to demonstrate how this can be used in practice.
- Solution coaching and assessment types and the importance of encouraging reflection.

*Each Zoom session will have a 20 participant limit.
Assessment
The course will be assessed by the course tutor through Q&A, assignments set and participation in discussion during the Zoom sessions. Attendance for the Zoom sessions is mandatory as they play an integral part of the course. Once you have attended both sessions and completed the online aspect you will be awarded the course certificate.
*To attend the Zoom sessions you will need a PC, laptop or iPad that can run Zoom and must also have a camera and microphone so you are able to participate in the discussions.
